Birding Nestled in the heart of British Columbia's spectacular Cariboo region, nature has created a distinct and perfect setting for one of the world's premier ranches. Lying amidst four distinct geographic areas called biomes, the surrounding landscape includes magnificent mountains, boreal forests, pristine lakes, winding rivers and steeply carved canyons. The bird-watching, photography and recreational opportunities are extraordinary.

Home to more than ten Gyr and Peregrine falcons, which are bred, trained and exercised by falconer Brian Davies, you'll see any number of Hawks, Hummingbirds and Osprey in and around the ranch. A little further afield, and there's the promise of Golden Eagles, White Tailed Ptarmigans, Lazuli Buntings and even the Great Grey Owl.

RAPTUROUS RAPTORS

Join EVR's resident naturalist and falcon trainer Brian Davies for a few days of birding that includes marsh and shore birds, and a myriad of raptors such as Bald Eagles and Kestrels, as well as Short Eared, Barred and Pygmy Owls. Brian, who was manager of the Reifel Bird Sanctuary for more than fourteen years, also helped the National Research Council in its pioneering work of using raptors to help control birds in air-space.

A typical week at a glance:

Day 1
  • Ranch orientation, and a geographic overview of this unique birding area
  • Training demonstration of EVR's falcons
Day 2: Marsh Walk

Breakfast early and then set out to explore the lake country. Here, among the creeks and waterways, are numerous sightings in store such as Marsh Wrens, Yellow Headed Blackbirds, Sandhill Cranes, Wilson Phalarope, Green Wing, Blue Wing and Cinnamon Teal, Lesser Scaup, Red Headed and Ruddy ducks, as well as Bald Eagles.

The afternoon is free to explore the ranch's spa and other activities.

Day 3: Rapturous Raptors

With a passion for raptors since he was a teenager, Brian has a sixth sense for these birds. This full day of birding will take you through the forest where you'll be on the lookout for Goshawk, Coopers, Sharp-Shinned, and Red Tail Hawks as well as Bald Eagles.

Day 4: Canyon Wonders

Breakfast early and head up through the sage-brush desert lands of the Fraser Canyon to see a Golden Eagle Aerie, Lazuli Buntings and Lewis' Woodpeckers as well as Western Tanagers, Clark Nutcrackers, Wilson's Warblers, Blue Grouse, Chukar Partridge and others. The afternoon is free to explore the ranch's spa and other activities.

After dinner: First Nations drum circle and dancing, reflecting the spirit of the eagle.

Day 5: Departures

Your package includes deluxe accommodation, three gourmet meals a day, full use of ranch facilities including sauna, hot tub, indoor pool, gym and more. Echo Valley also has a network of self-guided trails and an authentic Thai-themed spa to enjoy.
